mount kinabalu youth adventure 1
March 28th, 2005
It was after much thought and prayer that I decided to organize and lead a church-based expedition - Mt Kinabalu Youth Adventure 1, in March 2005. The whole idea was to develop leadership qualities in the young by using a physical challenge that was demanding but doable so that on doing it the participant gains some confidence and learns leadership lessons like EQ. A large part of EQ has to do with the setting of a goal; preparing and sacrificing in order to seek it (even postponing the gratification of desires); being able to relate with others and work as a team; persevering and never giving up despite obstacles. The preparation and the expedition itself brings these qualities to the fore: and the youths will experience what this meant and hopefully have these lessons etched on their hearts.

These are the people who signed up and trained for a few months before March 2005.

Standing from left: Yee Li, Joanne, Newman, Benjamin, Agnes, Nelson, Sophia.

Also in the team are Mao the Pri 5 boy in the front, and next to him: Daniel Tat Loong, and myself and Joanna Low with the ‘V’ hand sign.

My favourite peak in the background, St John’s peak. I like it because, unlike the other peaks, including Low’s Peak, it looks streamlined.

I felt exhilarated because in this second attempt I really reached the top.
Trekking together deepened the bonds….between father and son, Daniel and Glenn….

……between husband and wife, Peter and Eunice………..
……amongst parents Newman and Yee Li with daughter Joanna (before she flies off to U.S.A………….

…….father and daughter, Kenny and Elaine……

…..aunty Joanna and nephew Julian……
and also great comaradrie, fun and friendships…

…….Agnes Koh and Joanna (again? well it was her camera, haha)……

Tat Loong, Glen, Kenny and Newman enjoying the scenery.

My very helpful and reliable climb assistant Daniel Chew.

Don’t miss the pitcher plant.

And of course the reason why we are there: majestic, awesome Mt Kinabalu.

Observe the interesting sparse, wiry montane vegetation and the yellow soils. Very interesting part of the mountain. And the air has begun to thin at this height.

The welcome sight of Laban Rata the resthouse nestled high up in the mountains where we can refresh ourselves. There is hot food, showers, beds and rest for our tired bodies until the final climb at 2am the next morning.

And oh we cannot forget the lovely, enchanting clouds…

All in all, it was a memorable expedition and experience.Praise God!
