lunatic new year

January 26th, 2006

This morning I woke up at the unearthly hour of 6am.

The reason is my wife is cooking for the reunion dinner on Sat because my mum has dementia and has lost all her culinary skills. This means we have to do the marketing too. Why 6am? Because yesterday we went to the Jurong West wet-market at 7 plus and we saw a queue of about 80 people minimum at our favourite pork stall. 80 people waiting in line to buy pork…….while a neighbour stall had zero buyers! Can pork quality and taste differ so much?

We did not queue that morning.

That’s why I was in this queue of 30 this time. Because we were there at 6.15 am. Good tasty tender roast pork is obviously important to my wife. And a happy wife is important to me, so there I was.

Besides Satan, queuing is also on my hate list.

Talking about queuing,on Tuesday I was one and a half hours at the DBS bank queuing to deposit the church’s Sunday offerings ( I rarely do this) and you know what everyone is queuing for. New dollar notes. Why is new dollar notes so important? Value is same. Social pressure that’s why.

What made matters worse was a special queue called PRIORITY BANKING, which made me wonder, Am I supposed to queue there? How come those guys came later but are served faster?!

Finally when it was my non-priority turn I had to say to the teller, “Sorry for spoiling your day.” She had to take like 15 minutes at the machines to count and sort our coins (mainly from GNK….I hope, ha ha). To help her and me feel better I told her these were children’s donations to the church.

Anyway back to this queue of 30. I was thinking, if one person took 1 minute, its 30 minutes wait; if 2 minutes, it’s 1 hour wait; if 3 minutes it’s a one and half hour wait; if it’s 4 minutes its………….

We went to our second best favourite pork shop. A queue of 10. Waited about 20 minutes.

All for good pork.

Which is listed as an unclean food in the dietary laws of the Old Testament! ha ha.

Have a prosperous and l u n a t i c new year!
