changi coastal boardwalk

I took the 2.6km Changi Point coastal walk alone this balmy Monday morning, with water bottle and camera and cap. It was a pleasant and pretty walk and there were places where I just sat and enjoyed the occasional breeze in the cool shade. Though I try to be still my mind turn to thoughts of church and other matters. I do need more solitude and silence to nourish and refresh my soul.

The day was a little hazy and there were just a score or so of people fishing or taking a walk. Never knew there were so many buildings by the coast: Civil Service Club, Changi Sailing Club, Changi Beach Club, SAF bungalows and Govt chalets. With this public boardwalk we have sort of intruded into the ‘private’ space of the people who use these places.

The walk took about an hour and a half. Then at the Changi Point hawker center, I queued up at arguably the best nasi lemak store in Singapore. Its the same lady there, selling the same stuff I used to buy in a packet for my weekly all day fishing indulgence of many years back.

The nasi lemak costs SGD$3.50. I took the kuning fish set with a fried chicken wing side order. The rice is not as fragrant as I expected, but the sambal has a ’sedap’ tangy taste, the kuning fish and chicken wing were well seasoned and fried crispy and delicious. There just wasn’t enough rice to go with the meat…but there is nothing to grumble about. I give it a rating of 7 out of 10. Good thing I was there at 12 noon, as the queue remained constant even though there were two other stores a few steps away selling the same stuff.

My conclusion: when you become famous for your food, though it is not necessarily the best, its the Emperor’s New Clothes all over again. If there is a next time, I’ll cross frontiers and try the competitor’s.

At the Changi carpark guess who I bumped into? Yes Pastor Thomas after his golf practice and on his way to the same food store. I wonder if he will feel the same way about the nasi lemak as I just did.
