memorizing scripture
Norman Wong, my mentor friend, surprised me in our recent meeting. He actually recited the whole of Matthew 5,6, and 7, viz, the sermon on the mount. So what began as an agreement to memorize what scholars think is an ancient catechism for new converts, has actually been done….by him of course. I must say I was impressed, because the last time I met him he was behind, but now he has finished. As for me, I am still struggling, though quite inspired by his claim that he took only about a minute a day over several months. Its that simple….or so he says.
Memorizing really stretches me, and it forces me to give attention to the details, to the real words and meaning of Jesus’ teaching. Being his disciple, I want to know the heart of his teachings, to live by his word. And memorizing is just a personal first step of letting scripture seep and soak into my very bones and marrow.
