market rate for land acquired

Surprise, surprise! The government is planning to pay the prevailing market rate when it acquires land. This is wonderful news. In previous decades they used pre-determined levels (the last was Jan 1, 1995) which landowners complained were always below market rates. This was one of the injustices that riled me though I am no landowner(just an airspace-owner) and became one of the thorny issues that Singapore patriot J.B. Jayaratnam used to raise in parliament and in public. I am glad for this positive development. We are taking steps to live up to the national pledge which includes a declaration to seek “justice and equality”. Let justice roll like a river.

no festive mood

cny.jpgActually I must confess I had attempted a family escape to Bangkok over the lunar new year holidays. But Joshua said he had exams after the holiday period, and by the time we tried the idea in December, budget tickets were no longer budget fares, so the plan crashed before take-off. (My “roomate” Barny was smarter and he booked earlier and got real good prices for himself and his parents!). Why do I still wish I could be in Bangkok over this holiday season? I don’t even know what on earth I am hoping to escape from? I think I have this lurking longing of wanting to be free from all family and societal obligations; to be able to do what I really want, rather than what I am expected to. I wonder if many others feel the same way.
