market rate for land acquired

Surprise, surprise! The government is planning to pay the prevailing market rate when it acquires land. This is wonderful news. In previous decades they used pre-determined levels (the last was Jan 1, 1995) which landowners complained were always below market rates. This was one of the injustices that riled me though I am no landowner(just an airspace-owner) and became one of the thorny issues that Singapore patriot J.B. Jayaratnam used to raise in parliament and in public. I am glad for this positive development. We are taking steps to live up to the national pledge which includes a declaration to seek “justice and equality”. Let justice roll like a river.

no festive mood

cny.jpgActually I must confess I had attempted a family escape to Bangkok over the lunar new year holidays. But Joshua said he had exams after the holiday period, and by the time we tried the idea in December, budget tickets were no longer budget fares, so the plan crashed before take-off. (My “roomate” Barny was smarter and he booked earlier and got real good prices for himself and his parents!). Why do I still wish I could be in Bangkok over this holiday season? I don’t even know what on earth I am hoping to escape from? I think I have this lurking longing of wanting to be free from all family and societal obligations; to be able to do what I really want, rather than what I am expected to. I wonder if many others feel the same way.

resourceful agent

IMG_0113.JPG

Well I must thank God for Janet Chew my insurance agent. She somehow managed to get a claim done on a table glass top that broke when my daughter’s cell group was in theportraits_car_wash__sketches_031.jpg house. After their meal they were just having fun and chatting when the table cracked up due to pressure. Well it was all the excitement they needed that Saturday!! The authorities should interview Janet for legendary service!

brighter Mondays

Today is special. It is the last day of my wife’s part time job begun in July 2005. God is good and answered our specific prayer for a positive exit that would glorify His name. Future Mondays will be brighter with my wife around. She is warm, without guile and chatty and I love being with my opposite.

upgrading woes

Due to upgrading, some technical glitches have arisen including the comment box not working, old comments gotten all detached from the old posts and even all the king’s men cannot put them together again. My co-developer Vee is busy at the moment but it will be resolved soon. Our apologies.

Update 11 Feb: We resume our normal services for comments!

meeting on-line friends

IMG_1520.JPG

This is the first time that I have met up with people I got to know on-line through blogging so I guess it is crossing frontiers for me. They go by xanga blognames looxie and Curahee101 but their real names are Lynette and Daniel, husband and wife team from Church of our Saviour Anglican Church. Interestingly, Daniel is a grandson of the founding pastor of Church of the True Light at Perak Lane, which gathers in a beautiful Chinese style church building with nice calligraphy decorating the pillars done by the pastor himself. I told him I took several camps and meetings with that church a decade ago. Pastor Mary and my wife was also with me as we talked about the healing and wholeness ministry they were actively engaged in. I could see Daniel was able to explain things clearly and calmly, and Lynette was an experienced hands-on minister and exciting storyteller. Complementary. Both with very child-like vibrant faith and with good spirit. It is not surprising when you know that they have been under an able, godly mentor for 5,6 years. Our conversation took us around the world, and into the realm of spirits and angels and demons. It was fun and three hours just passed real quickly. Then we had a circle of prayer before we took the above photo. I received a prophetic word and you can you tell I was really blessed from the tongue of fire on my head!

EMPOLI STUDIO boutique

IMG_1511.JPGIMG_1514.JPGIMG_1519.JPG

Sunday last I dedicated EMPOLI STUDIO boutique to God. Lewis and Cavelyn (in pic with me) shared how the Lord has blessed them and how this has been a dream come true, a real milestone for them. I could see the boutique has a very good frontage at the ground floor of International Plaza and the range of men’s clothes, ties, cufflings, belts and shoes were good quality and fashionable stuff that confident executives and yuppies would love to wear. I am always reminded of the amazing grace of God and his work in their lives and family, transforming and guiding and blessing them. May their tribe increase and may this business prosper.

heroes of faith

Myanmar_Jan_2007_Mission_028.jpg

These friends of mine, Puay Hee and Jorris, are really faith-full and courageous. Jorris has been struggling with SLE a disease that turns the body on itself and attacks the major organs. Her kidneys were attacked and she was put on dialysis for many years. Then she went through several operations and finally a kidney transplant. Now she is on medication to help her body accept the donated kidney, and it isn’t smooth going, even till this day. The amazing thing is both of them display a biblical persevering child-like faith in God’s love and power and goodness. This is faith of a high level having gone through the furnace of fire and the tsunami flood waters, of pain and disappointment and sorrow, and by the grace of God, not only remained intact, but has had its roots broadened and deepened. They have attended many healing meetings and their eyes are on the Healer not just the healing. Their life of persevering faith and joyful service, free from anger and bitterness, is a shining light and inspiration to the church and all who know them. Do continue to pray for her health to improve by leaps and bounds and for abundant grace to keep them joyful.

MAY THEIR TRIBE INCREASE- A PEOPLE WHO TRUST GOD IN THE MIDST OF THE FURNACE, IN THE MOULD OF SHADRACH, MESCHACH AND ABEDNEGO.

sowing, reaping and patience

There were only four sessions for me to continue the book of Daniel and by Thursday, two chapters were left undone. So I passed the book by Gordon Wong to the principal and asked him to complete it himself when school re-opens. Friday was untouched because of rehearsals for the graduation ceremony on Saturday. My work was more or less done, and I started preparing messages for Thursday with SJSM staff, and Sunday’s combined service.

Myanmar_Jan_2007_Mission_021.jpg Pastor Thomas preached at the graduation as he told the principal that if there were any graduating students wanting to do Myanmar_Jan_2007_Mission_022.jpgchurch planting he’d try to be there.(This was a sacrifice as his wife’s birthday fell on one of the days during the trip.) It was satisfying to see two students willing to do church planting in partnership with our church: two ladies who caught the vision two years ago when Thomas talked about the need for church planting.Sow and you will reap if you are patient. The vision is moving forward. Teaching in the bible school is satisfying but the next time round, I’d like to fly in on a Monday, teach about 8 sessions from Tuesday to Friday, and return home on Saturday. That would be shiok!
