separating what God has put together
Kar Yong (the Homilia) has put up an interesting post on the controversial topic of “Divorce and Remarriage” and refers to an article by Dr David Instone Brewer in Christianity Today. I first heard about him and his book from Norman Wong but had no time(convenient pastor’s excuse) to read the whole book. Take a look at the article and keep an open mind as you read, and interact with the findings. One thing for sure, being tired of the marriage(click pic) is not one of the biblical grounds. In summary, for you lazy(some would say busy!) people, here is Instone-Brewer’s list of permissibles:
“Drawing on his research on rabbinic literature, David strongly affirms marriage, but also argues that divorce may be supported by the following limited grounds:
- Adultery (in Deuteronomy 24:1, affirmed by Jesus in Matthew 19)
- Emotional and physical neglect (in Exodus 21:10-11, affirmed by Paul in 1 Corinthians 7)
- Abandonment and abuse (included in neglect, as affirmed in 1 Corinthians 7)”
I dare not ask, “What do you think?”
