Speculating on water crystals

The comment about the video says, “Research from Dr. Masaru Emoto, says that when human thoughts are directed at water before it is frozen, images of the resulting water crystals will be beautiful or ugly depending upon whether the thoughts were positive or negative. Emoto claims this can be achieved through prayer, music or by attaching written words to a container of water. Since 1999 Emoto has published several volumes of a work titled Messages from Water, which contains photographs of water crystals next to essays and “words of intent”. My son Matthew showed this video and it set me thinking.

I would like to know your opinion if this is science or science fiction or new age stuff?

IF the above videos are real science, then it is fascinating giddy stuff.

Just think of our human body. It is largely water: 70%.

Let’s engage in adventurous speculation and extrapolation.

Will the harbouring of negatives like bitterness, anger, prolonged stress and hate cause malformation at cellular level that consequentially become a disease?

On the other hand, would grateful and joyful praise all day perk the body’s performance and resistance to disease?

What is the impact of our attitudes on our water laden body? What is happening at a cellular level? Are beautiful and ugly water crystals formed and if so are they precursors and indicators of health or disease?

What are the implications on meditation? Meditation is translated from Hebrew “ hagah” which means ponder, mutter, speak, muse, and imagine. When we meditate on the gospel and the promises of God thinking on it, speaking it under our breath, muttering it – what is happening to us psychologically and physiologically? What is being birthed in us?

We keep muttering verses like, “God is my refuge and strength”, or “The Lord is my light and my salvation, of whom shall I be afraid?” or “The Lord is my righteousness” or “The Lord will supply all my needs” or “He himself took my sickness and diseases”. We say them over and over. What happens as we do that?

What happens below our skin when we sing praises in the congregation or in the home? When we listen to different kinds of music?

Is speculating on water, instead of gold, the next best investment of the century?

  • Fascinating stuff. My Japanese student, from a buddhist sect, believes in all this and did a presentation on this before. One question is whether beautiful crystals actually contribute to good health.

However, I’m not surprised if there’s some truth to all this – that positive words corelate to positive health. After all, “life and death is in the power of the tongue”. Maybe the Word of Faith Christians are on to something (horror of horrors!). Of course, sometimes it’s taken too far – like when the Japanese guy says that the main cause of bad health for a person smoking stems from the words (of death) on the cigarette pack, rather than from smoking the cigarette!

Blogpastor, how about doing the experiment with rice suggested and share your results in this blog 🙂

    • Hi SHF

The “truth” is there are currently XIV recognized classes of ice structures – you can make thousands (infinite?) of sub variants by adding different concentrations of proteins, ions and other chemical compounds and varying the degree of heat transfer and the prevailing atmospheric pressure.

Interesting to see how ‘suckers’ are groomed by a potent mixture of plausibility and using the image formed by your “deceiving eye” as your main input witness.

Need more information on how to manipulate the formation of ice crystals – start at a good preview by Caltech people (Linus Pauling started describing ice crystals in 1935) :-

  • Hi Kenny,

I have come across this nonsense in 2007.

Gary Greenberg commented on Emoto’s work:

“As a scientist, I was astonished. It didn’t surprise me that I couldn’t find any scientific experiments [Emoto] has performed or any peer-reviewed journal articles that have been published describing controlled studies of Emoto’s work. A further search revealed that Emoto’s degree was from the Open International University in India, where an M.D. degree costs $500 and a Ph.D. costs $350, no classes or tests required.”

Kristopher Setchfield has researched on Emoto’s work and concluded, “After the lengthy review of Emoto’s research methods and results, I have come to believe that Dr. Emoto is offering pseudoscience to the masses in the guise of defensible research.”

  • I’ve flipped through his book and it’s very interesting. The crystal formations are real. One only has to read the book of Proverbs to know that God has a lot to say about speaking positively or negatively. The only problem with this research is that Emoto interprets the findings in a rather new-agey way, but you can’t blame him because he doesn’t know the Bible and what it says about the use of the tongue. On my water jug in the office, I pasted the words, “I bless you in Jesus name!”

  • Hey! Some years ago, my buddhist colleague said something like this too and he told to to try if I don’t believe. He said if we say only the good things to the water before freezing, the ice will be crystal clear while the normal ones are usually a whitish mass.

Just wondering if there’s anyone here ever interested (or tempted) enough try it?

    • Need a rational and scientific explaination – the same process that gives you cancer cures, vaccines, cars, internet, www and all the great things that make the highest standard of living to date and conveniences of modern life possible – from a respected scientific journal

      “February 2009 Scientific American Mind
Placebo Effect: A Cure in the Mind
Belief is powerful medicine, even if the treatment itself is a sham. New research shows placebos can also benefit patients who do not have faith in them…”

Fact is most humans prefer a “Matrix” world – to be fooled by all sorts of amoral professionals – especially the Wall Street Bankers. This absolves need for discernment and ultimately a high degree of moral deniability.

Posing a question to my NCC bros in the blogsphere – why pretend to seek the “Truth” when the “Lie” is so attractive???

  • maybe we should try putting bible verse cards on healing in our wallets/purses (but not read them), or wear christian-themed tshirts with bold words of healing and health… or study for exams by sleeping on our textbooks; p

  • I got a forwarded email of this too, and did my own research on the web. Having a socio/psych background helps in that the bias involved in the experiments were truly glaring.

On another note, a danger of this sort of teaching is that it while imparts a sound-enough Christian principle, it should not stand alone from having a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

    • Hi Tim,

Hopefully you are not advocating that it is ok to use a lie in order to impart the principle about the Truth or have I misread you completely?

      • Hi Journeyman,

Thankfully, you have misread me. Using an experiment done untruthfully to teach a truth just doesn’t cut it.
