Shekinah Assembly of God: a story of hope re-kindled

I must admit to being anxious about guest preaching at Shekinah Assembly of God. I had been resting for six months, staying away from ministry. In May I have to preach three times, two as a guest preacher, one in my home church. Will I be able to preach well or will I be rusty? Will I be able to deliver an effective message? These fears lose their hold over me when I was reminded of God’s words to Joshua, “Be strong and of good courage!” and another formative rhema that shaped my ministry, “I will be with your mouth and teach you what to say”, God’s words from the burning bush to Moses.

CURIOUS ABOUT CHURCH MARRIAGE

I admit to being curious about how this church of about 80 members and another church of about 50 members got “married”. I heard about their union from my friend Pastor Thomas, a good friend of the lead pastor Hock Cheng. I had so many things I was curious about: how it happened, what the process was like and how long it took, and what is the union like currently.

My wife and I arrived early at Parkroyal Collection Pickering, a five-star hotel in Chinatown. I later found out that the Lord graciously provided them this venue when the one they were at was on short notice to be used for quarantine purposes when the government reverted back to tighter pandemic rules. Thankfully we can rely on the Lord in these days of sudden changes. These changes give much stress to pastors, and as one who recently retired, I feel for pastors and their staff. 

FELT WARM WELCOME AND BLESSED

We received a warm welcome and a member by the name of Alvin filled me in on the origin of the church which I could very much relate to because of the similarities to my home church, World Revival Prayer Fellowship. They started as a youth group in a school (Tiong Bahru Secondary School) and they moved around till they settled in the Queensway Shopping Centre. My home church began at the back of the laboratory in Dunearn Tech Secondary School. How interesting.  Hearing that, I felt more comfortable immediately.

Then a gentleman by the name of Ian came and told me he had been blessed by my blog, and wanted to buy a Brompton bicycle too!  Such affirmation is like fuel to my engine. I know that by God’s grace, people are reading my blog, but to see the reader and hear him affirm my writing fires me up to keep pressing on.

The service (which was also live streamed via ZOOM) began with pre-service intercession and was followed by uplifting anointed worship led by a two persons ensemble: pastor Apelles, the former pastor, and a lady pianist.  I felt I was in the presence of God even though we could not sing. When It came time for me to preach I went with the flow and delivered the message I have developed with the Lord. It went smoothly. I was at peace. I felt I connected with the hearers. I was encouraged by the kind appreciative words of people who were blessed or touched by the message. 

POIGNANT AND INSPIRING STORIES

Pastor Hock Cheng and his wife Camelia brought my wife and I out for a tim sum lunch at nearby Chinatown Square. Over lunch they shared about the recent health challenge they went through as a couple and the inspiring story of the union of two churches. My wife and I were poignantly touched as we listened to their authentic sharing of suffering and joy, the love of the members of the church, and the fruit of the union: a re-kindling of hope in their hearts.

The story of the union of two churches is full of God’s fingerprints, his hand revealed in so many diverse ways. God’s favour and peace, careful thorough deliberation,  prayerful discernment, and attention to people’s feedback were evident in the whole process of union. In the words of pastor Hock Cheng in his “wedding speech” during Shekinah’s 28th anniversary, God’s providence – his arrangement of events and divine appointments – was the key factor in the fruitfulness of the union:

“I believe in divine appointments, do you? – Our God is a God of Providence!

Through a series of divine connections, our journey with CGC began in July 2017 when Pastor Stephen initiated a conversation with Silas and me to explore merging with Shekinah. The leadership teams of both churches subsequently met together (since Oct 2017) to pray and agreed to explore the feasibility of our two churches becoming one. Pastor Benny Ho, being a trusted friend to both churches, was invited to facilitate the meetings and provide counsel to both leadership teams.

Over the last 15 months, both churches have many different combined events, ranging from Christmas outreach, Family Day cum baptism and other special events. I think the climax was in the church camp when God knitted the hearts of both churches together. (When you go on a date, there is a special moment that touches you, and you say to the partner, ‘let’s get married!’ I think that was exactly what happened during the camp, a knitting of hearts that resonated, ‘let’s get married!’”)

Like a newly married couple, both churches have since gone through the stages of dating, courtship & engagement. By the grace of God, we are getting married today!

In the last 15 months, we discovered a few important things about each other:

  • We share the same vision of making disciples who love God passionately and love people practically.
  • The profile and demographics of both churches are very similar. 
  • Both churches are full of people who desire a meaningful community among ourselves while influencing the community outside the four walls of the church. 
  • Our core values, doctrinal statements and worship style are compatible and our commitment to the word of God is unwavering. 
  • We are “united in spirit, intent on one purpose” – to make a greater Kingdom impact than each church can do individually. 

In short, we found that we are better together than we could ever be apart!

  • Both have a heart for families and the next generation. 
  • Both have a vibrant missions emphasis. 
  • We are motivated, gifted people who want to honor God by using our gifts and abilities to advance God’s purposes. 

We want to reach more people for Christ, to multiply our church’s impact, to better serve our local community, to further extend God’s Kingdom”.

GREAT HUMILITY AND GENEROSITY

Pastor Hock Cheng was very humbled and grateful that pastor Stephen and members of City Gate Church were willing to lay down at the Lord’s feet, the name of their church, and to step down as the pastor. He felt City Gate Church had been very gracious and generous throughout the process of merger, a mark of their maturity and kingdom-mindedness. 

To me Pastor Hock Cheng sounded as grateful as a person who had received an organ transplant from a stranger – sheer grace, sheer gift. The union re-kindled hope in him at a time when he wondered if things would ever lift off for his home church. Now with this union of two faith communities, Shekinah has grown stronger, with a richer and deeper blend of gifts of organization and mercy, with more gifted and dedicated volunteers, a critical mass that can overcome inertia and build momentum. It is a match made in heaven but is being manifested on earth. I pray that with patience the union will bear much fruit for the kingdom. In fact, it has already done so when they did the Alpha Course during their Sunday Services prior to the Covid 19 outbreak, with many added to the kingdom. May  their love as one community abound, and may the Lord continue to anoint their vison of making disciples.

My wife and I went home feeling blessed to have witnessed a marvelous work of God.

LORD grant that more churches will find re-kindled hope in union of their churches with other churches. May there be a humility and generosity to lay down rights, entitlement, self-interest and pride. Let there be more kingdom-hearted leaders in our midst. Amen.

Beyond Interfaith Dialogue

My heart was warmed to read a lovely story of how young people from a church and a mosque have gone beyond stiff and awkward formal dialogues across tables to forge budding friendships and create platforms for interactions amongst people of two different faiths: Christianity and Islam. 

A CHURCH AND A MOSQUE

A church and a mosque in the Geylang Serai area building bridges and tearing down walls through joint activities and projects would be unheard of twenty years ago. I found the extent and depth of progress that have been made encouraging. The stories of how this interaction is affecting the young people of different faiths is inspiring and augurs well for interfaith relations and understanding in the future. 

INTER-RACIAL UNDERSTANDING BEFORE AND NOW

This has always been an area of concern that crops up occasionally when older adults like me chat with friends who were brought up in mixed neighbourhoods and schools where inter-racial intermingling and friendships were common. As a child I grew up in a neighbourhood where the apartment units directly around us were Malay, Indian and Chinese. We played together. We went to the same school. We visited each other’s home. And we enjoyed festive food during Hari Raya, Chinese New Year or Deepavali. We saw and heard things that helped us understand each other’s different culture and faith. 

It is different for the younger generation today. I don’t know what happened such that all my neighbours in Bukit Batok were Chinese. My children studied in Pei Hwa Primary School and there were no Indians and Malays there. Mainly at tertiary level did they have opportunities to mix with other races, but did they? By then I doubt they would go out of their way to intentionally make friends with those of other races. 

INTERFAITH RELATIONS

That is why I find it heart-warming that the church and the mosque were deliberately building bridges as neighbours. Easter and briyani: what a title to reflect diversity and interfaith partnership! I pray that their endeavours to understand and appreciate each others faith will continue to yield the fruit of love for neighbour in deeper dimensions.

Multi-tasking During Online Worship

Let us face it: online worship is here to stay – for the next two years, at least. Unlike on-site worship, that has established norms that developed over many generations of church culture, online worship has none.

NORMS IN ON-SITE AND ONLINE WORSHIP

On-site worship service norms are clear and established. Not so with online worship service. A norm is a guideline or expectation of proper behaviour that each society and culture decides as acceptable, and what violates that acceptability, and what to do with that violation. We all know what behaviours are expected in on-site worship services: punctuality, dressing, how to enter the sanctuary, how to sing during worship, or attend to the preaching and what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour, before, during and after the worship service. It is taught. It is mostly caught. But everything is new in online worship. It seems many of the guidelines and norms have been held in abeyance or thrown out.

MULTI-TASKING DURING ONLINE WORSHIP SERVICE

Multi-tasking seems to be the order of the day. While the online worship service is being streamed, or viewed later, viewers could be doing various other things while watching. Since there are no norms for online worship, anything goes! Here are some of the imagined possibilities.

  • Nail clipping or polishing,
  • Having your meal
  • Surfing other channels, websites
  • Answering emails, WhatsApp messages and social media
  • Doing your housework: folding and ironing clothes, vacuuming and mopping the floor, etc
  • Doing your hair or facial routines
  • Preparing meals
  • Chatting on phone or zoom or someone with you
  • Exercising
  • Reading or writing something unrelated.

INVASION OF GLOBAL ONLINE CULTURE

Multitasking during the online worship service is not something taught by the church. It’s the force of sheer habit and the invasion of a global online culture into the new territory of online worship culture. Since there are no established norms other forces hold sway. We are a people conditioned to require endless stimulation and engagement to stave away boredom and to feel productive and connected and excited. Multitasking gives us these. Since the church gives no guidelines, each person does what is right in his or her eyes, or gropes sincerely in this gap of ambiguity.

NAVIGATING THE NEW TERRITORY

A mature Christian would ponder about how to navigate this new territory. If the believer would ponder over the purpose of worship, he should be able to draw some principles upon which to form new norms of online worship for himself or for his or her family.

We know the purpose of worship is for us to glorify God and enjoy Him. We remember the Lord and all he has done for us through his finished work, and respond by giving him thanks and praise, and also to attend faithfully to what he wants to say to us through his Word, his Spirit and his Body. This requires the positioning of our whole body and soul to be actively and wholly involved. This cancels out most multitasking during online worship.

Its hard to imagine Moses multitasking while God spoke to him during his burning bush experience. He was on holy ground – to multitask would akin to tearing out the heart of that encounter, that worship experience. Jesus reproved the Pharisees and scribes, “These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me”(Matt 15:8). We cannot afford to let our hearts drift away from God during online worship. St Paul said to the Corinthian church. “I have the right to do anything,” you say – but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything” – but not everything is constructive. (1 Cor 10:23 NIV).

The main idea is to participate, to be attentive to, and respond to how the online service is moving your heart, and not merely to watch the whole program like a task to dutifully complete to soothe your conscience, and to have some comment to make in case some leader asks you about it.

DIFFICULT WORD TO ACCEPT

This is a difficult word for people to hear. Everyone wants to be in control and do whatever is right in their eyes. This is precisely where coming under Jesus’ rule and kingship cuts the Adamic tentacles of rebellion that still desperately cling to our hearts after our conversion to Christ. Discipleship is not theory. It is very practical. It boils down to how you posture your heart and how you behave in all spheres of thought, speech and conduct. In this instance, we are talking about online worship conduct.

You may disagree with me and I am certainly aware that worshipping online at home becomes a challenge, even a meaningless routine, or worse – a drag – after the initial novelty has worn out.

I fully encourage support of return to on-site worship services. If you cannot do it every Sunday because of safety and other constraints, then less frequently, but seek to resume attendance with your whole body and soul. You can read more about my thoughts regard this HERE.

Understanding the Catholics

I have included in my blogroll three blogs written by Singaporean Catholics. I believe that these are interesting blogs in themselves, but I encourage readers to explore them to understand more about Singaporean Catholics and their beliefs, and depend less on hearsay and preconceived ideas.

There is sufficient misunderstanding of differences among denominations to start a civil war, so every bit of openness and careful listening to appreciate one another is a move forward. The Church encourages inter-faith dialogue, so why not encourage inter-denomination, or inter-Christian tradition dialogue too.

One thing we digital citizens can do is read what Catholics write in their blogs. Here are three that I know of and they are all in my blogroll for your convenience. Ravi Zacharias: my hope for pastors and churches

Why was I reluctant to read the full Miller & Martin report about Ravi Zacharias? Was it because I could not bear to face the pain? In the past two decades I have seen too many of my evangelical and Pentecostal heroes falling by the wayside one after another. Months back, when I first heard that an independent investigation about allegations of Ravi Zacharias’ sexual misconduct had been ordered by RZIM, the very organization he founded, I wasn’t too hopeful of the results. 

I SAT IN MY CHAIR IMPALED

When the report was published, I was reluctant to read it. Partly, I did not want to read the sordid details. It would be too distressing. I wasn’t surprised that the report found that Ravi had fallen. Past failures of other heroes have conditioned me to expect the worst, not the best, in such cases. In Ravi’s case, I was not surprised he was guilty. When I finally was willing to read the report, I found it horrifying, staggering, and unsettling. After reading it one evening, I sat in my chair as one impaled by a sharp stake. “O Lord, Lord Jesus, Lord Jesus”.

I sat transfixed because it was much darker than I had expected. It was more than seductive texts, compromising conversations, and situations. It was more than having a moment or two of weakness and falling into sexual sin. It was an intentional lifestyle of adultery, fiduciary failure, deceptive cover-up, manipulation and abuse of the weak and powerless over a period of at least six years.

Let me explain. I was not a fan of Ravi, never have been. I never was enthusiastic about “Apologetics”. I came from a generation that had powerful, life-changing experiential encounters with God during the revivals of the 1970s. God is as real to me as the people I know. Personally, I never needed arguments for everything contradictory in the Bible, or for the existence of God, or to arm myself against the intellectual attacks of atheists. I rested on the solid ground of my experience of the Living and Written Word. If I deny God, I would have to deny my very own existence. I could live with seeming contradictions in the Bible and in life. I do not need answers to every question a sceptic asks. That was my story, that was my song. However, I had acquiesced to the younger pastoral staff’s opinions that young people needed to be armed with apologetics for themselves and to give answers to those outside the faith, and so I turned to RZIM Singapore for their expertise. But I was never a fan.

I did not feel disappointment, disillusionment nor compassion for Ravi. I felt more of anger, like the anger one feels towards a bully. I felt more of disbelief at the huge gap between what is seen in public, and what was his secret private life. I empathized with the wife and adult children that they have to pick up the broken pieces of what could have been a shining, lasting legacy of faith. I wished his sins were exposed earlier, and he had the chance to repent and be restored with God, family and ministry -a chance to write a redemptive final chapter of his life.

I have been reflecting on what happened and I have read a few of the reflections of others on social media. I liked what church statesman Rev Edmund Chan said about the posture and position to maintain in such circumstances HERE. I also liked Dr Michael L. Brown’s list of twelve responses HERE and Michael Han’s poignant response as one who was greatly helped by Ravi’s ministry HERE. We all view the same things but from different angles because of our different experiences and viewpoints. This variety can only add to the richness and depth of the conversation. Thus, I humbly submit my reflections and pray it would be of some help to some who read it. 

HUMILITY IN COMMUNITY

My first takeaway is that we all need humility in community. God is triune and by nature communal and he has built that into us who were made in his image. I have been blessed to have trustworthy pastor friends from different traditions. For about two decades, we met regularly and shared what went on in our ministry and our soul. We became burden-bearers and prayer warriors for each other. I was privileged and blessed to have Rev Kenny Fam and Rev Vincent Hoon as my companions in the journey of life and pastoral ministry. My current community is another gracious gift from God. It comprises Dr Jimmy Tan, Seng Chor and myself. 

Within that community, we need to exercise true humility – the willingness to let our friends know us as we really are. To be able to share about our failures and shadows so that they are brought into the light. We need openness and trust and truthfulness in that safe community. The double-life virus has no room to spread if exposed to the light. I thank God that in the two groups God has blessed me with, I have experienced openness and trust. 

MORE ATTENTION TO SOUL CARE

We also need more attention to be given to soul care in all our churches. Call it transformation or sanctification. Call it holiness or the deeper life. Call it spiritual formation or discipleship. We need more attention to be given to the care of the soul, to the shaping of the soul in the likeness of Jesus in his intimacy with the Father and love for people.

The soul of the Church has been shaped too much by the consumerist culture around her. In more than one ways, there is no difference between the Church and the world. The world idolises its heroes, so do we. The world values image above substance, and performance and charisma above faithfulness and character. Is the Church any different? Let’s be honest: our churches have been structured for productivity and performance, not soul care and faithfulness.

Ravi had charisma and he could perform. His eloquent defence of the Christian faith was persuasive, effective and productive. Thousands were persuaded to follow Christ and as many were strengthened in their faith and equipped to be witnesses. His YouTube videos received thousands and millions of hits. His memorial service attracted vast numbers of viewers. He had a vast following. His fans sang his praises, quoted what he had said, and believed him without question. They supported his ministry generously and his organization expanded internationally. His popularity grew exponentially, the needs and invitations kept increasing, the pressure kept mounting. If the inner life was not sufficiently reinforced, the outward appearance will look great and grand, but the weak, rotting and unattended inner-life will disintegrate from within, and the grand and great tree will crash, damaging all others around it. More attention needs to be given to soul care among our pastors, leaders, and members.

It is easy to make our heroes into our golden calf. We sing their praises and share their videos, believe their every statement without checking with the Word; we say what they say; and defend them with pride and passion. Who doesn’t like celebrities? We make celebrities of pastors and evangelists and worship leaders who were not interested in the spotlight! Perhaps we unknowingly set them up for the fall. We even use them as “gold standard” and “best practices” to motivate our pastors and worship teams to try harder to be better. We are too sophisticated to berate our pastors directly, so we hint, we compare, we give books, we applaud, we even pray that our pastors will be more like them (we really do not know what we pray for!)

APPRECIATE LEADERS WHOM WE KNOW

We need to appreciate our local pastors and leaders whom we personally know, and stop idolising the heroes whose lives we do not know, and is likely impossible for us to know personally. The pastors and leaders you should trust are those who are faithful to live by the gospel, those who are humble and willing to let you know them as they really are. 

It is not easy for pastors to let people know them as they are. And in a big church it is a big ask for the senior pastor to be known personally by every member. Perhaps from the pulpit the pastor can share more of himself or herself in slices that are honest and true, when it is relevant to the sermon preached. Over time more congregants will get to know him or her better. 

I cannot help but think of Pastor Lawrence Khong and his many self-disclosures of his personal, marital and church struggles from the pulpit. I find he is safer to follow than those who keep their struggles secret. What you see is what you get. I know there is no foolproof way of knowing a person completely because secret sins can be kept locked unless the person or the Lord opens the safe. However, we should not be jaded about trusting leaders and following leaders ever again. It is better to follow those whose strengths as well as weaknesses we know than those whose strengths we exalt and have no clue about their weaknesses.

Lord, I wish for all pastors to have trusted friends with whom they can share openly and honestly about their life and ministry struggles and joys. I pray they will give more attention to their own soul care and those of their leaders and members. Most of all, I wish for them greater honour, following and appreciation from their members. Amen.
